EC Marking and regulatory compliance

Winkler is a pioneering company in Italy in the development of low environmental impact products for the construction sector combining high technical performance with sustainability. This approach is driven by continuous investment in Research & Development, enabling the company to deliver advanced certified solutions which have often far exceeded required standards, providing designers, companies and end users with true added value.

All Winkler products comply with the strictest European quality and safety standards. Where necessary, EC marking certifies conformity with essential standards concerning:

  • mechanical performance,
  • user safety,
  • durability over time,
  • environmental compatibility.

This criteria is defined in Regulation (EU) No 305/2011 of the European Parliament (CPR) regarding construction products.

Where required, compliant with this regulation, Winkler provides the relative Declaration of Performance (DoP), that specify technical performance regarding the essential characteristics laid out in the harmonised standards in question.

Certified Laboratory tests

All Winkler products are subject to certified laboratory testing conducted according to recognised Italian and international protocols. These tests control performance in actual working conditions and guarantee material reliability over time. The main aspects subject to testing include:

  • Emission of volatile and carcinogenic substances (in compliance with EC1 PLUS limits)
  • Impermeability
  • Resistance to freeze/thaw cycles
  • Material durability
  • System breathability
  • Mechanical resistance
  • Adherence to various support bases
  • Reaction to external fire
  • Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)
  • Sliding resistance (non-slip)
  • Root penetration resistance

Thanks to these rigorous controls, Winkler products are ideal choices for responsible construction, even in contexts requiring compliance with environmental standards such as LEED, CAM, BREEAM or DGNB, in which indoor air quality, durability and sustainability play a fundamental role.

UNI 11928 – Liquid applied roof waterproofing products

This Italian standard, published in October 2023, defines performance requirements and test methods for waterproofing products applied in situ on continuous roofs.

Parameters such as waterproofing, fire resistance, and crack bridging are defined, and, most importantly, the tests used to evaluate a system’s durability are identified.

All products are also subjected to various tests depending on their intended use. For example, a green roof will use a material with adequate resistance to root penetration (Antiradice), while for exposed roofs, external fire resistance must be assessed, which in Italy is required to be Broof T2.

Which products in the Winkler portfolio comply with UNI 11928-1?

  • One® Range
    Wingum Plus® H₂O Range
    2021

EDP

EPD (Environmental Product Declaration – certification) is a document that describes the environmental impact of a product during its life cycle, according to international standards.

The assessment is carried out by considering various product, or product category characteristics such as the resources consumed and the emissions generated during production. It also considers the environmental impact and entire life cycle, including product disposal.

This process makes it possible to have a transparent view of a product’s environmental impact, since the assessment is carried out by a third party, independent of the producer.

This declaration is often requested to qualify materials used for public works contracts or those subject to environmental certification (CAM, LEED, BREEAM)

Wingum Plus® H2O products are reinforced with Wintechno Mat fabric with EPD certification, and which have been tested for the following:

  • Composition, considering it contains 79% of recycled material
  • Production and its environmental impact
  • Carbon Footprint
  • Resources consumed during production

UNI EN 13501-5:2009

European fire classification of construction products and elements – Part 5: Classification according to test results following roof exposure to fire due to external factors”

This certification identifies the behaviour of roofing materials and elements when subject to external fire. Normally, these situations occur when the roofing is equipped with technical and or solar panel installations which can spark fires.

EN 13501-5 classification is obligatory for many building roofing types (especially in fire risk areas), according to the European CPR (Construction Product Regulations) and National standards (e.g. DM 03/08/2015) applied in Italy for fire prevention).

Broof t2 fire resistant classification will protect roofing against any possible sparked flames from spreading and is a necessary feature for modern roofing.

The Winkler range includes various products, classified and tested to this standard:

  • WINGUM® PLUS H2O BROOF T2
  • WINGUM PLUS® H2O BROOF T2 REFLEX
  • 2000 PLUS BROOF T2
  • 2000 PLUS REFLEX BROOF T2

The test is conducted using a material sample laid on a support base with an established density (e.g. EPS, wood, metal, concrete panels). Live embers are placed on the material, and the flame is fed by blowing air at an established speed and duration during the test (15 minutes). The flame must not spread further than 55 cm.

During the Wingum Plus® H2O fire-test, the flame spread was less than 20 cm.

The product was successfully tested with Wintechno Mat reinforcing on EPS, obtaining certification for supports with a density equal to or over 15 kg/m3.The product was also tested without Wintechno Mat reinforcing, and obtained certification for supports with a density equal to or over 510 kg/m3

UNI EN 14891:2017

Waterproofing products in liquid form for use under ceramic tiling laid using adhesives. Requirements, test methods, compliance assessment, marking and labelling.

ANSI A118.10 and ANSI A118.12

Compliance with international standards is fundamental in the construction industry in order to guarantee quality, safety, and durability of the products applied. Winkler products destined for under-tile installation in conditions subject to damp or mechanical stress comply with ANSI A118.10 and ANSI A118.12, standards, two key references in the North American market for waterproofing and anti-fracture applications.

ANSI A118.10 – Under-tile waterproofing products

The ANSI A118.10 standard refers to performance requisites for waterproofing membranes used under ceramic or stone tiles. To comply with this standard, products must respect the following:

  • Prevent the passage of water under pressure or without pressure,
  • Demonstrate resistance to cracking and structural movement,
  • Maintain flexibility and adhesion properties even in critical conditions,
  • Guarantee compatibility with adhesives and cement products.

Compliance with this standard ensures that membranes provide reliable protection against damp, even in conditions with high exposure to water, such as bathrooms, showers, terraces and balconies.

ANSI A118.12 – Anti-fracture products

The ANSI A118.12 standard refers to anti-fracture membranes, in other words, systems that are able to compensate movement and cracking in the underlying support base, preventing stress transfer to the ceramic flooring. To comply with this standard, products must respect the following:

  • Be resistant to crack spreading up to at least 1/16” (1.5 mm),
  • Guarantee dimensional stability and adhesion to the support base and floor coating,
  • Preserve the integrity of system application during differential displacement.

The application of membranes in compliance with ANSI A118.12 standards helps prevent appearance and structural damage to flooring and floor coverings, especially where support bases are not perfectly stable or are subject to thermal variation.

Thanks to compliance with these standards, Winkler products such as WINGRIP® BITUMINOSO guarantee high performance levels both for waterproofing quality and for floor coating durability, offering construction professionals reliable solutions for application in residential, commercial and industrial buildings.

UNI EN 1504-2 - Protection and restoration products for concrete structures – protective coatings.

The European UNI EN 1504-2 standards refer to products and systems to protect construction concrete from external aggressive agents such as water, chemical agents, carbonation, chlorides, and other factors that can compromise structural safety and durability.

Standards definition

UNI EN 1504-2 establishes the performance requisites, test methods, and acceptance criteria for protective coatings. The main characteristics which must be guaranteed include the following: adhesion to support base, impermeability to water and gas, resistance to shock and abrasion.

Typical applications

Coatings in compliance with EN 1504-2 standards are used to protect concrete structures as follows:

  • Civil and industrial buildings
  • Infrastructures such as bridges, viaducts and tunnels.
  • Structures exposed to aggressive climate conditions (maritime, industrial)

Importance of this standard

EN 1504-2 is a fundamental standard that ensures the durability and safety of concrete structures over time. It guarantees that products used for protection purposes respect the strictest technical criteria and help prevent structural deterioration, contributing to the reduction of maintenance costs and repairs.

CRRC RATED PRODUCT CERTIFICATION

Products registered with the “CRRC” (Cool Roof Rating Council), guarantee high Solar Reflectance performance levels.  The CRRC is a USA non-profit organisation which certifies roofing material performance according to the following:

Solar Reflectance

This indicates how much solar light is reflected by the material. It ranges from 0 to 1: the higher the value, the greater the material’s solar heat reflectance.

Thermal Emittance

This measures the amount of heat dissipated by the material.  This also ranges from 0 to 1: Higher values mean that the material will cool more easily.

Solar Reflectance Index: SRI

This combines reflectance and emissivity to provide a score that represents the capacity to maintain low surface temperatures. The higher the score, the better the material reacts on hot days.

These characteristics are assessed on new materials immediately after application, as well as on older materials. This condition is fundamental in understanding material behaviour and the ageing process over time.

The use of CRRC Rated products, with high Solar Reflectance, thermal emissivity and SRI performance levels will result in reducing roofing temperature, improving building efficiency and roofing solar panel installations, as well as compliance with the latest LEED and/or CAM certification standards.

The Winkler products tested and certified according to CRRC rating are as follows:
